Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What Should I Expect When I Visit?
A: As you prepare to visit with MUMC, be prepared to experience friendship, love, and spiritual fullness. Early morning Sunday school classes and after worship fellowship and Brunch add to the experience.
Q: Where do I go?
A: On Sunday enter the Church via the front, side, or rear doors. You will find a welcoming, loving congregation happy to greet you. Greeters are stationed at the front and rear of the Narthex. Ushers are stationed at the three entrances to the Sanctuary. In General, anyone with a red nametag can help you find your way. During the week enter the church through the rear entrance.
Q: Where do I park?
A: Parking is available in the rear and side of the building but tends to fill up early. Parking is available on the streets around the Green. Parking is Free on Sundays. Public parking is available behind the Post Office, two buildings down from the Church.
Q: I have a disability, can I still participate in Worship?
A: Yes! Handicap parking is available on the side of the Church and under the Portico by special arrangement. The Side entrance is handicap accessible. Large print hymnals, bulletins, and hearing devices are available on the usher's table. Wheelchairs are available by the side entrance. Ask the Ushers for assistance if you have any special concerns. We want your visit to be as pleasant as possible.
Q: How should I dress?
A: With the broad range of people worshipping at MUMC, we have people coming in every type of attire from blue jeans and sneakers to their “Sunday finest." Most people dress casually. Bottom line, wear whatever feels comfortable to you! You will be welcome!
Q: How many sacraments are there in the United Methodist Church?
A: We have two sacraments: baptism and communion.
Q: How do United Methodists perform baptism?
A: We believe baptism is a gift from God given without price. Therefore we baptize infants, children and adults alike. Normally we baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy God using water on the forehead but we can baptize using full immersion if special arrangements are made.
Q: How do United Methodists perform Holy Communion?
A: We offer communion the first Sunday of every month and on special days. Everyone who professes Jesus Christ is welcome at our table. We use bread and grape juice in deference to those who can not partake of alcohol. Normally we use intinction which involves taking a piece of bread and dipping in the cup. We believe in the mystery of faith and the reconciling and healing properties of this sacrament.
Q: How do United Methodists discern how to act in the world?
A: We refer to scripture, tradition, reason, and experience.
Q: What role does Music play in your Worship Service?
A: Celebration of Christ through Music is a very special part of MUMC. We offer a variety of music each week. We sing hymns from the hymnal accompanied usually by organ. Often we have praise choruses as part of our service, especially as the congregational introit. Our choirs sing everything from Bach to spirituals -- and a lot in between. Occasionally members of the congregation or outside musicians will enhance the worship service with a special presentation. Our award winning Music at Noon and AbendMusik programs augment an exceptional Music program at MUMC.
